Music From a Birdcage’s ‘The Haircut Song’ is janky progressive rock with a lo-fi vibe. “Music from a Birdcage is the solo project of veteran Bay Area musician Matt Deems,” this artist says, “who has contributed to a number of musical endeavors over the years,” including “as a guitarist and songwriter for the respected San Francisco post-rock group Form and Fate.” This track, “written and recorded using only an iPad, a $30 iRig interface and a guitar… represents Deems’ first solo undertaking, with the eight-track From My Trench to Yours finding the artist distilling his musical inspirations to their more essential components.” This song just has a cool vibe. There’s sort of mechanistic, assembly line vibe it has going that really digs into you. Obviously, there are some clear lines that can be drawn to groups like Tool, but at the same time it feels like there are some connections to noise rock acts like Nothing or Lightning Bolt. More broadly, one could say the automated nature of the percussion gives this a rhythmic feel more akin to electronic music or trap than rock. This is a cool track from a talented songwriter.
