A Review of Bryce Bowyn’s “Ruthless” by Cory Stewart

Bryce Bowyn has always been a prominent figure in the queer community. His voice loud and his visuals even louder. As someone who knows Bryce, and has been friends with him for a little over a year now, his new song Ruthless was a delight to hear.

Bryce is dramatic. We know this to be true. We also might be correct in assuming that his music is designed not just for the ears, but moreso for the visuals he is about to create to accompany them. Ruthless immediately conjures images of Bryce glamorously posing in a diamond mine, singing to a soon-forgotten-lover. Bryce’s musical journey has been one I’ve loved watching. From the early days of Cabana Boy (available now on iTunes) to Ruthless — it’s been amazing to see his journey as an artist. Not only has he played with delivery of his vocals – which in Ruthless are by far his best yet – but his production skills are up with the best of them.

The rolling chorus makes you want to swell, the verses make you wonder and the bridge – “I show no mercy, or else you’ll hurt me” – is exactly what I wish I’d said to my first boyfriend.

I got to interview Bryce about the release, check it out below!

Describe your release in 3 sentences.

Ruthless is made for the dancefloor. It’s about revenge. It’s stunning.

What scenario inspired Ruthless?

Like many songs, this one was inspired by heartbreak. I was hot off a break-up and was seeing this new guy. He was an asshole and loved to gaslight me. I was sick of being heartbroken and wanted to be the heartbreaker for once. Thus, I got a little ruthless.

What was your favorite part about making this release?

The song turned out exactly the way I envisioned. Often when I’m working on music, the concept takes some twists and turns and ends up being something new and different and I love that. But with “Ruthless,” I knew exactly how I wanted it to sound and Alex Flagstad, who produced it, totally nailed it on the first draft.

What was the hardest part making this release?

Well, it will be coming out soon, but the video was very physically demanding. There’s a lot of action and a lot of choreography. And it’s set in some rough terrain. It was probably our hardest shoot yet.

What can we expect next from you?

I have an EP that I’m planning on releasing at the end of the year. So you will definitely be getting some more singles, videos, and remixes before 2021 is through.

What other artists are you listening to right now?

Well, of course I’m listening to you, Mr. Stewart. Tov is a stellar album. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Madonna, Blondie, and Robyn while writing this EP. So maybe some of that will rub off on the new stuff.

Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions for us, Bryce!

Bryce is a friend first, but more importantly a talent you shouldn’t overlook. Commissioner Gordon obviously just put out the Bryce signal, because he has arrived.
