Florrie’s “Human” Wears its Heart on its Sleeve

The newest single by UK pop artist Florrie weaves a message of stripped-down relation into its smooth, electrified production.

At its heart, “Human” is a story of that elemental facet of the human condition- connection. “I feel lucky just to know you / So it’s okay to ask for help,” Florrie sings over a steadfast 80’s pop beat and synth swells. “Babe I’m only human / I’ve got a world outside me / and you don’t have to prove yourself / ’cause you are only human like me,” follows in the chorus, alternating the outside/inside element to express that complexity of feeling and being that we all experience in life. The song acts as both an assurance and a pleading call for empathy to Florrie’s lover, reminding them of these vibrancies in relating to one another while also inviting the adventure of exploration and vulnerability.

A strongsuit of the song is its ability to balance this tender sentiment with hooky, electro-pop production and a driving pace that wears a deceptive sheen over the gentler, organic matter at the center of the lyrics. “Human” is good fun with clever phrasings and a subversive approach to its production/lyric balance. It is out now and can be streamed everywhere!
