PENNY is a singer songwriter from Huddersfield in England. 2021 has been PENNY’s debut year, starting in July with her single “Sad Puppy.” On September 1st, PENNY dropped another single, titled “Ur Girl’s Fine.” Her latest single “Cauchemar” dropped on November 24th, and it’s the one we are obsessed with right now.

The song starts slow and beautifully with the delicate yet steady paced instrumental and PENNY’s stunning voice. We are led directly into the first verse, where PENNY delivers a soulful vocal delivery in what feels reminiscent of the Neo-soul movement in the early 2000s. I especially loved the bridge, where PENNY’s ethereal vocals float us carefully through the air, and directly back into the catchy chorus. I find myself grooving to the song all the way til the end. I definitely can’t get enough of this song and the vibes surrounding it!

I had the privilege to interview PENNY about the song, check it out below!

What inspired you to make this song?

I wrote this song all about how strong and confident you can feel whilst you’re in a relationship. I don’t really relate to the lyrics of this song anymore, as I feel like I get all my strength and confidence from myself, and I don’t need a partner to make me feel that way! I really empathise with the lass who wrote this song all those years ago, but im really glad I have finally come to that realisation now.

What was your favourite part about making this song?

My favourite part about making this song was really just seeing how much it has developed over the years. I wrote the song back in 2016, and it’s really morphed and changed since then. I think it’s just dead interesting to hear the changes, and in a way, hear how the song and myself have matured.

Where did you record this song and what are the vibes like in the studio with you?

I first recorded the demo of this song with my ex-boyfriend in our little student house in Bangor. Then, when I met Will Serfass (WASSAILER), I ended up going to his London home, and we recorded for real there. It was the first time I’d ever been to Will’s house and recorded with him so it felt really, really special. I’m still reeling over the fact it wasn’t all just a big dream!
I’d say the vibes are quite laid back, and easy going. Sometimes, it can get a bit tense if I’m struggling to work out a harmony or hit the big notes, but Will always keeps me grounded and calm, and I appreciate that so much. I think it’s hard to find people who you work well with, but I dropped on very lucky with Will.

Was this release cathartic for you?

In some ways yes, but in others I guess not at all. It felt good to release this song, as it felt like the last thing that was keeping me and my ex tied together. Severing those ties with an ex always feels quite good and cathartic to me. However, I don’t feel like the lyrics represent how I feel anymore, and I feel like I’m not being true to myself sometimes when I’m singing this song live. It’s such a groovy bop though, that I find it easy to ignore those strange feelings that come up.

What keeps you motivated?

If I were to answer this completely honestly, I’d have to tell you that I find it extremely hard to keep motivated. I’m the kind of lass who finds it hard to write a load of songs. If a song’s going to be written, it usually comes to me quite naturally and I’ll just wake up on a morning with the song ready in my head, and I’ll just record the demo straight away.

What can we expect next from you?

I’ll be releasing my debut EP, ‘My Secret Powers’ early 2022, and I’ll also be doing some gigs with my gorgeous band (The Sweet Bisques) in February next year. I can’t wait!

What other artists are you listening to right now?

Self Esteem, PinkPantheress and Katy J Pearson have been on solid rotation recently. I just feel well empowered when I listen to them, and I’ve had a lot of great memories happen with these artists being the OST. Honestly can’t get enough of the new Self Esteem album.

Thanks for taking the time to answer those questions for us, PENNY!
