Big Guitars, Fat Bass, and the American Dream on Trial: Nick Moon’s “Setting Sun”

Nick Moon recently dropped “Setting Sun” and it hits like a freight train with something to prove. The guitars come in swinging immediately, raw and in your face the way guitars are supposed to be, crashing into a bass so fat and round and chest-rattling that your body reacts before your brain even knows what’s going on. The vocals channel the best of 1980s post-punk and synthwave with the kind of conviction you just can’t fake, the kind that makes you want to slam your fist down and nod your head and feel alive in a room full of people who get it. The snappy snare locks everything into a propulsive, driving groove and the whole mix is controlled chaos done exactly right, loud and urgent and impossible to stand still to. Moon is going straight for the throat lyrically, tearing apart the myths and lies of the American Dream with the energy of someone who is completely done pretending everything is fine. And the brilliant thing is that for all its fury this song is an absolute blast, the kind of righteous chaos that leaves you fired up and ready to do something about it. Los Angeles has always bred that spirit and Nick Moon is carrying the torch. Crank it up.
