CHEONG NAN’s “Nostalgia” Is a Shoegaze Powerhouse

Seoul-based CHEONG NAN are doing something special and “Nostalgia” proves it beyond any doubt. The guitars hit you immediately, super dreamy and thick and swirling, the kind of shoegaze wall of sound that craddles you in a warm blanket. And then the drums come in and everything shifts, heavy and powerful and absolutely relentless, a genuine powerhouse performance that drives the whole track forward with the kind of force you feel in your bones. But here is where it gets really interesting. The moment the vocals arrive the drums pull back, creating this beautiful breathing space where the dreamy, emo-tinged melody floats on top of everything like it was always meant to be there. The tone is stunning, warm and melancholic and completely captivating, and when the harmonies join in they pull the whole song sideways into rock territory in the most thrilling way possible, adding texture and depth that makes you want to hit repeat immediately. CHEONG NAN have taken shoegaze, emo, and indie pop and forged them into something that sounds entirely their own. Seoul is sending us something incredible and “Nostalgia” is the proof. Do not sleep on this band.
