With the Holiday happening tomorrow, the day so many are waiting for is coming soon…Black Friday. Some folks wait an entire year to fall to capitalism and get the products they think they need. People want what they want, when they want it, and they want it for cheap. They are willing to sacrifice their values, get in fights and arguments, just to get that product. Black Friday brings out the worst in so many people.
Singer-songwriter John John Brown has the perfect song for this strange day. “On Black Friday I Met Jesus” starts with smooth guitar riffs, a simple drum groove, and a somber vocal tone. The lyrics tell the story about people fighting over appliances and merchandise at Walmart on Black Friday.
The lyrics seem to tell the story of John John Brown discovering a sad Jesus in aisle 7 that no one else in the store wants. The metaphor in the lyrics seems to be that people are giving up on their values, their religion/spirituality, and on being peaceful and kind just to score a deal. Lyrics go into a scene of Jesus talking to John John Brown, explaining that people are more interested in materialistic possessions than finding joy in the things that have existed for a long time and always will exist, like the stars.
