Jovi Skyler is Sydney’s True Psychedelic Punk Rocker

Jovi Skyler, based in Sydney, Australia, is a true punk. He is self-produced, writes all his own songs, creates his own videos and is super DIY. Skyler’s music is complete with raw, rebellious lyrics and distorted guitars. Hints of psychedelic rock make Jovi Skyler a standout gem in the genre.

Jovi Skyler kicks off their brand-new EP “Call It A Day” with a dynamic punk rock track called “Asshole.” This was the first single to be released leading up to the EP drop. This mostly energetic song shifts into a moment of laid back psychedelic rock before exploding back into a heavy punk rock jam. An angsty vocal delivery fills this track with massive amounts of emotion, hitting the listener like a wave. This nonconformist song is an anthem of angst and rebellion.  “Asshole” is all about being the most authentic version of yourself, completely and unapologetically. Jovi Skyler plays electric guitars on this song and also plays bass guitar, an instrument he learned specifically for this recording.

““Asshole” is about sticking to your guns and being your true self, regardless of society’s opinion or expectations about you.” – Jovi Skyler

The grungy 90s punk vibes continue on “Lil Bo Weep.” This song sounds much like retro punk rock, with a distorted vocal and all. This vibrant tune encapsulates the experience of being a young person, brimming with themes of heartbreak, self-discovery, past trauma, and coming head to head with inner demons. The vocals on this song really standout because they are packed with attitude and angst, coming across as extremely authentic. They are quirky and cool, and all around, just super punk. All the emotion that was felt while writing the song can be heard in the end result, this recording, which makes the track really stand out. Jovi Skyler says this was his personal favorite song to record. Rock the Pigeon was shocked to find out that this was a live vocal take, that was done in just one shot. These vocals seem the most special to us here at Rock the Pigeon.

“Everything was done mostly in one take, the vocals were literally one live vocal take at the end of the first day’s recording session, after a sleepless night, no less. It was just a fun song to record.” – Jovi Skyler

The mood switches from punk and rage into grief as an acoustic guitar kicks off “Frankenstein.” This song is a heartbreak ballad that captures the mood of existential dread because it is all about realizing that all of us face an eventual death. The vocals are delivered in an emotional fashion that lean towards 90s grunge. The lyrics repeat: “Stitched up like Frankenstein.”

The energy picks back up for the finale track. “Rumble” is a dynamic track with the most catchy hook line of the EP. It also features hints of psychedelic rock and retro punk rock. “Rumble” is a fiery song, with shouted, repetitive vocals. Distorted vocals, honest lyrics, and experimental transitions from section to section are hallmarks of this track. This track shows all sides of Jovi Skyler’s sound very well.

“Rumble might have been the longest to write, but there is no particular rhyme or reason. Some songs come together quicker than others. I suppose if raw emotion is attached to a song and is the driving force, everything connects quicker. It just pours out with no hesitation or afterthought.” – Jovi Skyler
