Berklee-based indie rock collective The Iddy-Biddies have delivered something genuinely special with their latest record “The World Inside,” a deeply organic and beautifully crafted album that draws inspiration from Kill Rock Stars legends The Decemberists and the melodic dissonance of Elliott Smith, alongside the timeless spirit of old timey rock and roll and the joyful energy of The Beatles. Bits of Americana, singer-songwriter intimacy, and psychedelic wandering run through every track, led by the vision of singer-songwriter Gene Wallenstein and a collective that clearly knows how to play together with real heart and intention.
The record opens with “It’s Just a Show,” gritty acoustic guitars kicking things off before the bass takes hold of the mix and western guitars begin to swirl around in a way that feels immediately psychedelic and free. The Iddy-Biddies have shared that this song draws inspiration from the late great Alan Watts, the philosopher who ignited the Beat Generation with his landmark 1957 book “The Way of Zen,” influencing everyone from Allen Ginsberg to Jack Kerouac, who famously portrayed Watts as “Arthur Whane” in Dharma Bums. That free-spirited energy is all over this recording, the guitars swirling and the track breathing with the kind of looseness that makes you feel like anything is possible. The lyric “Let it go…, it’s just a show that’s meant to numb your troubled mind” is a call to move beyond the media fog and set yourself free, delivered with the kind of cosmic calm that recalls the best of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. It is a stunning way to open a record and immediately pulls the listener in to their sound.
Things pick up considerably on “Mr. September,” a track with a shuffle feel that immediately brings to mind the loose, joyful energy of early Beatles records. The vocal delivery is wonderfully raw, landing exactly where it needs to land without a single wasted moment, while the Alice in Wonderland imagery in the lyrics gives the whole thing a carefree, wonderstruck quality that is impossible not to smile at. The chorus is pure classic rock gold, a melody so catchy and so warm that you will find yourself singing “Mr. September” right along with the band before the track is even halfway done. The harmonies that lift the song in its final moments are the icing on an already irresistible cake.
“Follow You Anywhere” announces itself as a love song from the very first guitar lick, played with such tenderness and jolly warmth that it genuinely feels like falling in love and sitting inside the bliss of it. The song is about long term commitment, about loyalty and the unashamed joy of choosing someone completely, captured perfectly in the lyric “Every time people stop and stare, it only makes me feel you everywhere. When they find out, I just don’t care, cause I would follow you anywhere.” The bouncy guitars and drums sway in perfect rhythm, the whole band moving together like a single heartbeat, and by the end the love has fully set in and you feel it too.
The title track closes things out as a psychedelic ballad, acoustic guitars and accordion opening up a sound that leans fully into the band’s folky roots while carrying the emotional weight of a relationship falling off the hinges. There is a quiet desperation running through the lyric, a spiritual tension that makes every word feel heavy and necessary. “You can’t wait to tell me ‘I told you so'” lands like a gut punch, and yet even in its heaviest moments “The World Inside” carries a sense that there is still a way forward. It is a deeply human record, and one of the most rewarding listens we have had in a long time. Dive in.
