Sneaky Ex Got You Down? Blast Luke Bentlay’s “My Boyfriend (Has a Boyfriend)”

Did Siri read your cheating ex’s texts out loud, too? Blast Luke Bentlay’s “My Boyfriend (Has a Boyfriend)”

Oh, to be the guilty, messy S.O.B. who did a pop musician that dirty. Not just any musician — Vancouver-based pop artist Luke Bentlay. Transforming a story of being betrayed by a sneaky boyfriend, it’s an empowering song of uncapped pop star energy. “My Boyfriend (Has a Boyfriend)” is a hard-earned call-out you can only get from honest songwriters (made by talented producers); Luke Bentlay happens to be both, and more.

For such a fearlessly expressive song about a queer relationship gone wrong, you start to wonder who the person is that got to this point. For many queer musicians, facing the truth of your lived experience has not come easily. Those who learn to lean into their shine, like Luke, have stories of their own that came well before these songs.

“Growing up in the small town of Ladner as a young queer man, I discovered music as a haven to express my truest emotions. I have been writing songs before I knew they would be called songs, as a form of free therapy. Eventually, I studied music at Langara College, where I was educated on production, and soon I began creating demos and mixtapes.”

It starts to make sense as to why his music production sounds as clear, punchy, and as seriously professional as it does. Luke Bentlay’s former internship at Blue Light Studio led to where’d go on to record his debut EP, “Darker Places” (2019). Since then, he’s released various singles such as “Taboo”, “Everything…” featuring Janockeil and “Say Somethin” featuring Joseph Rose.

Even still, it’s the songwriting that’s the beating, bleeding heart on this track. Both playful and cuttingly sincere, the lyrics and arrangement make this a catharsis of queer love turned sour thanks to a cheating, lying man.

One of the lines that caught me smiling through an unexpected gasp is, hands down, “I’m killing you in the Sims” …! As you should, Luke! This is a song for anyone who needs to get in that Sims Honda Fit and hit him with your car! Iconic!

With all that in one song, by this point you’re probably hooked or ready to scour the internet for more of his music. Good news! According to Luke Bentlay, he has this to say about what’s to come:

“I am so excited to announce new music this summer, produced by the incredible m8xton, who has worked with talented singers such as Madisyn Gifford, Sahati, CHEEYA, and Molly Annelle.”

After listening to “My Boyfriend (Has a Boyfriend)” it’s more than safe to say that Luke’s listeners and collaborators (and future audiences) will be excited, too.
