Hot Mulligan’s new song ‘How Do You Know It’s Not Armadillo Shells?’ is a distinctly emo tune with a surprisingly broad array of influences. These Lansing, Michigan natives employ emo’s traditional heartfelt, emotionally-wrought lyrics and crunchy, power chord-heavy guitars. It diverges from genre norms in its use of automated trap-style beats and it’s patience in introducing the track’s emotional crux. The Moog synth, an emo pop staple, is masterfully contained in a way that amplifies its sentimental and sonic value. These guys have an appreciation for the lo-fi DIY vibe but have no issue going all in when the song calls for it. This seemingly SoundCloud-oriented group may be an early harbinger of the impending chillwave-emo convergence. Their new record Pilot just dropped on No Sleep Records. Go check them out!
