<p>Hot Mulligan&#8217;s new song &#8216;How Do You Know It&#8217;s Not Armadillo Shells?&#8217; is a distinctly emo tune with a surprisingly broad array of influences. These Lansing, Michigan natives employ emo&#8217;s traditional heartfelt, emotionally-wrought lyrics and crunchy, power chord-heavy guitars. It diverges from genre norms in its use of automated trap-style beats and it&#8217;s patience in introducing the track&#8217;s emotional crux. The Moog synth, an emo pop staple, is masterfully contained in a way that amplifies its sentimental and sonic value. These guys have an appreciation for the lo-fi DIY vibe but have no issue going all in when the song calls for it. This seemingly SoundCloud-oriented group may be an early harbinger of the impending chillwave-emo convergence. Their new record <i>Pilot</i> just dropped on No Sleep Records. Go check them out!</p>
