Provoker’s ‘Sex With My Ex’ Is Fuzzy, Precise Post-Punk

7 12 18 ProvokerProvoker’s ‘Sex With My Ex’ is fuzzy, laid back post-punk with a poppy groove. According to their website, the group hails “from the Bay Area, featuring members of San Jose and Oakland punk bands.” They describe their music as, “a cracked version of new wave/dark wave,” featuring, “steady beats, warbled horror soundtrack synths, reverb, gauze-like layers of guitar sound over undeniable melody.” These guys do a great job of meshing a dark, personal aesthetic and lyrical approach a refined, high-brow pop sensibility. The precise, almost computer-like drums are lined up perfectly with the bass line. This steady rhythmic approach contrasts really well with the fluttery, untethered melodic work carried out by the guitars, synths and vocals. These guys know exactly what they want to play and have the skills to make it happen. Check out ‘Sex With My Ex’ below!
