Bershy is in love and she’s ready to broadcast it to the whole world.
“Radio”, the latest single from the Cincinnati queer pop star recounts singer songwriter and producer Brea Shay’s transformation inspired by meeting her partner at a party.
“Before I got together with my partner, I was really depressed. I hated going out or being around people. Parties were a literal nightmare. But when we met my whole outlook changed and I found myself excited about life and love. ‘Radio’ is the story of that change.”
“Radio” marks a new era for Bershy as she takes on a larger role in her own productions, preparing to launch her next EP early next year.
Bershy is an American queer pop artist from Ohio and the stage name for Brea Shay. In 2020 Bershy released three demos on her own which quickly garnered a following amongst her hometown music community.
The attention led to extensive play on local independent radio station WGUC 90.9 Inhailer Radio, further establishing Bershy as an up and coming artist in the burgeoning Cincinnati music scene.
In 2022 Bershy began working on new music, announcing her upcoming single “Radio” co-produced by Shay and Multimagic’s Coran Stetter.
The song begins with a steady paced drum and synth on the instrumental, combined with Bershy’s beautiful voice accompanying the track ever so gracefully. The lyrics guide us through a story of someone who’s ready for love, and we can feel the chemistry in the song. I find the vocal melodies throughout this song are very catchy and easy to sing along with, and the vibe of the instrumental is simply immaculate. It’s everything we could want and more from an indie pop song, making this a must add to your playlists!
I had the privilege of interviewing Bershy, check that out below!
Bryce: What was the inspiration behind the song?
Bershy: I got to a place in my writing where I wanted to explore further into pop and funk elements— and I figured there’s no better way to do that than with a totally outrageous love song. It’s about the completely cheesy but true sentiment of love transforming and uplifting so many aspects of my life.
Bryce: How did you come up with the creative direction for the song?
Bershy: When I made the commitment to pop, I wanted to do it all the way. I was really inspired by 80s pop music for this track, so a “Jane Fonda Workout Video” aesthetic seemed like a perfect fit.
Bryce: What was your favorite part about making this song?
Bershy: Radio is so special to me because it’s the first song I’ve put out that I had a really heavy hand production-wise. I was lucky to work with Coran Stetter and Kyle Kubrick (of Multimagic) who truly made sure all my ideas and dreams for the song came true. Every session was so fun.
Bryce: What does this song mean to you?
Bershy: This song feels like it ushers in a new phase of music for me, it feels like the truest representation of where I’m at post-pandemic. I poured a lot of love into the track, and it has a special place in my heart forever. I’m really proud of it.
Bryce: What can we expect next from you?
Bershy: We spent a lot of last winter working on demos, and my goal is to put together a collection of new music by spring.
Bryce: What other artists are you listening to right now?
Bershy: Right now I’m on a heavy diet of 90s Britpop for some reason? The Sundays and Cocteau Twins specifically. Remi Wolf is also my like ultimate crush right now.
Thank you for taking the time to answer those questions for us, Bershy!
