they&&num;8217&semi;ve released a debut album that I&&num;8217&semi;ve been playing on repeat since its release this past Friday&period; In a time where it&&num;8217&semi;s seemingly easier to grow numb and dejected from horrific news and harmful hot takes we doom scroll past&comma; Olive&&num;8217&semi;s songs glimmer of more than just hope for the humanity within us&semi; their album <a href&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;oliveklug&period;ffm&period;to&sol;dydmmj"><em>&&num;8220&semi;Don&&num;8217&semi;t You Dare Make Me Jaded<&sol;em>&&num;8220&semi;<&sol;a> insists and invites an innate&comma; free-spirited cadence that refuses to back down no matter the trauma or tribulation&period; In their refusal to become jaded&comma; they&&num;8217&semi;ve unlocked an unwavering gentleness and joy born through compassion for confusion&comma; mistakes&comma; magic&comma; and the overwhelm that is living as a force of optimistic determination&period; For those who seek folk as a means of finding companions in a journey of standing strong against opposing forces&comma; discovering ways to pursue joy&comma; write my own rules&comma; and learn how to take up space as someone who has been taught to make myself small&period; Joy is something we must assert&period; And as a queer artist in an increasingly hostile environment&comma; the album begins with a track aptly named <em>&&num;8220&semi;Faking It&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> As a foundational component to the album&&num;8217&semi;s initial tone&comma; it speaks about a very familiar hater that lives in their head &&num;8212&semi; a hater that both denies their goodness and qualifications to be good enough&period; In <em>&&num;8220&semi;Faking It&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em>&comma; Olive&&num;8217&semi;s three-quarter time story about the con of waiting and the self-set expectations that force us to inevitably surrender the idea of a clean slate admits that there might not ever be a day that will come&period; As organic as the instrumentals and harmonies&comma; the contradictions between facing the thief of time and the earnest rush to tackle the weight of our to-do&&num;8217&semi;s exist in the same space&comma; because of and alongside one another&period; &&num;8220&semi;If this is real&comma; why do I feel like I&&num;8217&semi;m faking it&quest;&&num;8221&semi; For what it&&num;8217&semi;s worth&comma; you can&&num;8217&semi;t fake honest writing nor a performance like this&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>After the admittance of feelings of fraud crack the conversation wide open&comma; we delve deeper into one of the dizzying methods of validating whatever our truth is&comma; or maybe could be&comma; on <em>&&num;8220&semi;Second Opinion&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> Olive&&num;8217&semi;s voice resurrects a painfully gorgeous sound of unknowing while pointing to the very things that feel distant&period; &&num;8220&semi;My canvas is blank as a mirror&comma; paint me however you&&num;8217&semi;d like&period;&&num;8221&semi; There&&num;8217&semi;s an existential and solitary exhaustion that often arrives in a person when being misheard or misrepresented&comma; seemingly searching for validation or guidance while they &&num;8220&semi;pick opinions like petals off flowers&period;&&num;8221&semi; In respect of an underlying wish to know if they&&num;8217&semi;re overthinking or truly going through time consuming motions of proper decision making&comma; it&&num;8217&semi;s clear that they&&num;8217&semi;ve crafted a place where their most important compass can resonate alongside a sweetly simplistic rhythm of their acoustic guitar&period; Ingrained in its delivery&comma; there&&num;8217&semi;s a sense of softness in the descending letdown of always needing others speak for yourself&period; <span id&equals;"page46R&lowbar;mcid40" class&equals;"markedContent"><&sol;span><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>That sense of burning time is evidently met with a new approach when we reach the next track&comma; <em>&&num;8220&semi;Out of Line&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> A song with a new energy in its step and swing&comma; they ease into melody with lyrics like&comma; &&num;8220&semi;Every afternoon I spend muddying my shoes&comma; don&&num;8217&semi;t try to tell me that I need new laces&comma;&&num;8221&semi; which calls into itself a parallel to the album title&period; &&num;8220&semi;I&&num;8217&semi;m done waiting so I guess I&&num;8217&semi;ll just get out of line&period;&&num;8221&semi; This is the antidote to becoming too attached to &&num;8220&semi;silly little lines&&num;8221&semi; that the song professes we can erase&comma; actually&period; Ease up&comma; step out of line&comma; maybe even scrap needing so much external input or prescribed structures that don&&num;8217&semi;t work for us&period; This song is penning your own permission slip to live your life outside the lines&comma; then scribbling a love note all over it before folding it into an airplane to land wherever the wind might take it&period; This is one of those songs that puts a smile on your face before you realize it&comma; speechless and free&period; <span id&equals;"page46R&lowbar;mcid41" class&equals;"markedContent"><&sol;span><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>There&&num;8217&semi;s elements and narratives of time and growing up&comma; including the strange delays of wondering when you&&num;8217&semi;ve come of age&comma; while the world spins and turns in countless directions&period; As many of us juggle chaotic lives with laundry lists of overwhelming to-dos and adult-sized concerns &lpar;big &&num;8220&semi;toddler running through a bank&&num;8221&semi; energy&rpar;&comma; their &&num;8220&semi;I&&num;8217&semi;m not busy&comma; I&&num;8217&semi;m just full of reservations&&num;8221&semi; lyric hits like a life-sized Tonka truck on <em>&&num;8220&semi;Coming of Age&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> With a resolute sense of responsibility in examining immature moments and overrated adult beliefs&comma; Olive holds dearly to adolescent stories that formed who they are&period; Playfulness in the instrumentals and production is both a highlight and consistent approach throughout the album&comma; especially on this song&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p><span id&equals;"page46R&lowbar;mcid43" class&equals;"markedContent"><&sol;span><span id&equals;"page46R&lowbar;mcid44" class&equals;"markedContent">In consistent &lpar;although novel&rpar; spirit&comma; the track <em>&&num;8220&semi;Bath Bomb&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> feels like taking a slow&comma; wooded walk with a friend you already miss before you float off in your own directions&period; The space for vulnerability and adoration shine through by design in its aptly timed riffs and melodic motifs&period; &&num;8220&semi;You told me that you&&num;8217&semi;re softening but scared&period; So I&&num;8217&semi;ll put your boxers on&comma; you&&num;8217&semi;ll hide under the covers&period; Everything but our bodies will be bare&period;&&num;8221&semi; Maybe it&&num;8217&semi;s the fact that they&&num;8217&semi;re an LA based artist hailing from Oregon&comma; but &&num;8220&semi;Bath Bomb&&num;8221&semi; feels like sharing the comforts of Bagby Hot Springs with a companion who understands the magic of our youth will dissolve naturally against the unrelenting pace of the world&period;<&sol;span><span id&equals;"page46R&lowbar;mcid45" class&equals;"markedContent"><&sol;span><span id&equals;"page46R&lowbar;mcid46" class&equals;"markedContent"><&sol;span><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>With its own set of contradictions comes<em> &&num;8220&semi;Parched&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> Aptly themed with a <a href&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;www&period;youtube&period;com&sol;watch&quest;v&equals;ejvdDY3Kiu8">music video<&sol;a> set in a desert of red flags&comma; &&num;8220&semi;I&&num;8217&semi;ve been stuck in a drought&comma; thought you&&num;8217&semi;d be my way out&comma; but I&&num;8217&semi;m parched after talking to you&&num;8221&semi; nods to an exhaustive chronicle of an emotional mirage&period; The pulse of the track sounds like it chose to move through Olive&comma; and Olive had no other choice but to let them lead the dance &lpar;much like the way they speak to the person this song is geared towards&rpar;&period; There&&num;8217&semi;s an ache that echoes somehow endearingly by the end&comma; as if the spaces between contradicting emotions left enough of an isolating venue to let it all air out&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>By the time it reaches its inevitable resolution&comma; the next song<em> &&num;8220&semi;Cut the Ties&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> grants a power that <em>&&num;8220&semi;Parched&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> had seemingly drained&period; &&num;8220&semi;I got not that much to lose&comma; so cut the damn ties&&num;8221&semi; is as resolute in accepting change as you can really get&period; Deliberate and pointed remarks on specifics&comma; Olive&&num;8217&semi;s story draws a clear power from accepting the beautiful grays and finding meaning in loneliness suited for a journey into more purpose&period; &&num;8220&semi;Loneliness suits the open road&comma; just like a hand me down coat &lbrack;&&num;8230&semi;&rsqb; it&&num;8217&semi;s okay to tear it down and redesign&period;&&num;8221&semi; Without much to lose&comma; they gave this song a strong finish with all they had that&comma; and it fit like a garment of experience they&&num;8217&semi;re mending as they go&period; Wherever they go next&comma; <em>&&num;8220&semi;Cut the Ties&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> is sure to set them free to reach those foreign skies they sing about&comma; sun on their skin as they traverse what it means to make peace with seeking more&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Reaching the end of the album&comma; we arrive to another place where the album origins are made even clearer&comma; its flagship in a sense&period; &&num;8220&semi;Some of this magic has faded&comma; but don&&num;8217&semi;t you dare call me jaded&period;&&num;8221&semi; <em>&&num;8220&semi;Casting Spells&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> grants a look inside the alchemy of Olive&&num;8217&semi;s becoming on this album&period; From <em>&&num;8220&semi;Do You Think of Us&quest;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> and <em>&&num;8220&semi;Ghost of Avalon&comma;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em> it sets the stage to bring the early parts of the album to one of its most profound moments on the final track&comma;<em> &&num;8220&semi;Taking Up Space&period;<&sol;em>&&num;8221&semi; To this point&comma; we&&num;8217&semi;ve traversed time and self belief&comma; strength and letting go&comma; casting spells in our lives and casting away whatever holds us back&period; There&&num;8217&semi;s a depth of space delved into in this particular song&comma; one that reaches heights of ceiling raising backed harmonies&period; A moment of effortlessly summoning sounds I recognize from Hayley Williams&&num;8217&semi; solo work and boygenius level crescendo in a motion of their own&comma; Olive finishes the album with an illuminating and elevating energy that affirms the wonders of the space they&&num;8217&semi;ve crafted&comma; taken&comma; declared&comma; and generously shared with us on <em>&&num;8220&semi;Don&&num;8217&semi;t You Dare Make Me Jaded&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;em><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>This entire record is a beautiful conclusion that illuminates the fact that Olive Klug&&num;8217&semi;s refusal to give into despair is a worthwhile pursuit beyond what can be measured&period; With a guitar and an angelic voice&comma; their instruments speak to the loyalty and reverence they hold with their precious and other-level talents&period; An artist of incredible introspection&comma;
