Since its release on June 19th, 2026, Kojo Kay’s highly anticipated EP, THIS DOESN’T FEEL GOOD BEING STUCK HERE IN THE SAME SPOT 🙁, has captured audiences from coast to coast through exceptional genre-bending production, textures, and raw contemplations on his life so far.
Kojo Kay is a first-generation Canadian-American musician born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in Vancouver, BC, with roots spanning both East and West Africa (Uganda and Ghana), each special place playing a major role in becoming the artist he is today. With an eclectic upbringing and background spanning multiple coasts, Kojo began infusing his inspirations and perspectives through music, releasing his first tracks in 2021. With an intentional pivot in 2022, Kojo Kay shifted his focus from dropping tracks to crafting his distinct, personal voice as an artist. He set out with a fierce desire to create his own unique sound. Now, in 2026, we get to listen to him completely pull it off on THIS DOESN’T FEEL GOOD BEING STUCK HERE IN THE SAME SPOT 🙁.
Breaking regional and genre barriers, this project is the product of an artist who has given his heart both in-studio and in the life that’s inspired his work. Kojo Kay’s sonic artistic signature and personal perspectives serve as the very blood and bones of the record. His reflections on societal roles and the cultural backdrops of his lived experiences are found throughout the entirely pensive and ambient experience.
“This EP is the fourth release off my self-produced debut mixtape TONEBOW,” Kojo shares. “I worked with my mentor, Juno Award-winning Engineer Jamie Kuse, on the entire project. My goal on this EP was to give a preview of TONEBOW by releasing these 5 songs on the project early.”
The EP kicks off with three previously released teaser singles before diving into two brand-new tracks. Here is a track-by-track breakdown of the journey:
1. THE BOYZ ALL WENT TO JUPITER
The project opens with a clever nod to the old childhood adage of where boys go if “girls go to college to get more knowledge.” It’s a creative spin from the very first intro through to the last measures of this sonic introspection. Kojo describes the track as, “An introspective flow of conscious speaking on my own shortcomings/lack thereof as well as how this reflects broader society masked under a popular playground rhyme.” It’s an incredibly strong start to the EP, showcasing self-taught production skills that beautifully underscore his genre-bending instrumental and vocal chops.
2. UNDERWATER FIRE
Next up is a track speaking directly on the growing distance within friendships and relationships, serving as a gentle reminder to be cautious of one’s energy.
Kojo employs gorgeous, lush harmonies to underscore the melancholy feeling of acknowledging fake friendships, weaving them into an undeniable flow that inspires the listener to protect their personal peace.
The track is accompanied by a stunning music video filled with nostalgic shots of aquatic and ghostly imagery, offering a playful exploration of Vancouver that perfectly mirrors the song’s underlying themes.
3. THE HUMMINGBIRD TOLD ME IT’S ALL GONNA BE ALRIGHT SO I GUESS IT REALLY WILL BE SO
“[This] song I wrote speaking of the universal feeling of the sum of all one’s problems in life and those of the world simultaneously weighing one down to the point of near collapse.” – Kojo Kay
Kojo’s voice manages a cutting edge while maintaining an undeniably smooth, individual fingerprint. Tastefully produced vocals and percussion carry a rhythm as unique and hooking as his lyrics. “I still pray for Trayvon, I still pray for myself” pays homage to Trayvon Martin, ending the verse with, “All you can do is just inhale… and exhale.”
Powerful and raw, this is a track that can’t be made without a crucial vulnerability Kojo Kay brings to the surface. You can almost tangibly feel the creativity in the air when it plays. It is easily one of my favorites on the project; it’s playful in melody without ever cheapening the song’s heavier elements or losing the full spectrum of context reflected through his sound design and sharp lyricism.
This song is the kind of deep breath needed when the world weighs as heavy as it does on people like Trayvon, like Kojo’s sister, like him.
4. OVERTURE TO SOMEWHERE
The first of the new tracks, this song tackles the ups and downs of a healthy relationship and the importance of coming through the other side together; the second half serves as a testament to continuously working towards what you are looking for.
Here, we see a recurrence of Kojo’s ability to smoothly switch up rhythms across sections to keep us on our toes. Swells of electric guitar and touches of gentle flute runs act as a sweet counter to his vocal melodies.
It builds into a crazy section of guitar and synth shredding, bringing an exponentially gathering jolt of mind-blowing emotional complexity. With the mantra “I know I’ll find my way somewhere” repeated over a powerful outro beat, Kojo resolves the emotional and tonal tension beautifully, proving his ability to transmute raw emotion through a production desk.
5. BREAK JOHNNY
Serving as the project’s powerful outro, this final track is about remaining unbroken and continuing to fight on despite all the pain the world may cause or the lack of changes we wished to see. Kojo Kay’s life story, leading up to this EP release, paints an image of a resilient and beautiful mind, and it culminates here.
With heavy, striking lyrics like, “I don’t get up, I get even. I don’t count sheep, I count lesions,” the weight of Kojo’s journey becomes palpable. Yet, despite all the sorrow endured along the way, the final lyric—“go ahead and try”—keeps your chin up while the melody speaks to the intricate beauty of survival.
