Americana with a Haunting Twist: “Goliath” by Ghost Flowers
It’s dark and terrifyingly enticing storytelling with an edge a country mile wide. Country, Americana, Acoustic Folk duo – call them what you like. From the name itself to the haunting bloom of their sound, Ghost Flowers’ “Goliath” sounds like it was written in a centuries-old cottage overlooking the vast, sun-bleached plains of the American West (and it actually was; hardly gets more authentic than that).
The band is made up of two strong vocalists and instrumentalists, husband-and-wife pair Armand and SJ, who have forged their foreboding and entrancing musical presence straight from the inspiration of rural life’s realities.
“Goliath” is reminiscent of “Hypothermic” by Goodnight, Texas, yet laced with something that eases an unsteady spirit through a nightmare. This particular Ghost Flowers track has that special something to raise your blood pressure just as much as the hairs on the back of your neck.
“Goliath is a fable about when people stop listening to one another. It’s about assumption taken for fact, and the court of public opinion. A woman performs a vigilante act of justice against someone she just spent the night with. But the act itself sabotages the morality they’ve tried to uphold. The woman and the mob never find out the truth behind this man because they are their own echo chamber. They continue their hero’s celebration while our morally ambiguous protagonist lies buried in an unmarked grave.”
Its own beast entirely, “Goliath” is cut from the same impressively rugged cloth of Americana excellence in the vein of The Civil Wars, Bon Iver, and some of that potent black-clad kick of Johnny Cash.
Their harmonies are soulful while incredibly great at conveying the morose undertones of the stories they tell on “Goliath.” Entrenched in their craft is evidence of their passion for their music, which strikes as naturally as the sunlight upon the plains where this song was written.
