Micah Willis Turns Rock Bottom Into A Sultry Blues Climb On “Apr. 4”

When the angsty, distorted guitars hit the speakers, I expect “Apr. 4” to blossom into an emo anthem. I am pleasantly surprised when the lead guitar enters, playing a sultry blues. Then the voice of an absolute angel arrives, as Micah Willis fills the room with tenderness and carries the spirit of the blues. He reels us in with a catchy melody, a blues standard, and lyrics of struggle and heartbreak, making this an immense display of talent. This is a song about his rock bottom with substance abuse, and it captures the desire to give in to the struggle. Yet the song also helps him overcome and process that darkness, and now he sings his story stronger than ever, reminding everyone that they can dig their way out of the dark hole too, and yes, climb that mountain.

“I’m losing grip, I’m losing time, This mountain is too big and I’m too weak to climb.”
