Papaya Tree’s ‘Youth’ is some smooth alternative rock with clean, decidedly eighties approach. Since its “conception almost two years ago, the six-piece outfit,” is releasing this as its third single. “Following their last releases, they [have] sold out” several venues, “and are currently touring around with Sex on Toast.” There’s a lot going on with these guys. Their emphasis on punchy sax lines and slinky understated guitars is reminiscent of some tropical, jazzy club music. At the same time, the bouncy, anxious bass line layered around ethereal keys gives the track a darker feel. This sentiment is furthered by the vocal approach which has a very fine, but not overly tenuous grit reminiscent of Bowie or Morrisey. This is a fun track from a talented band.
