Elemantra’s ‘Such Tiny Fish’ is expansive, freeform alternative rock with an untethered shoegaze vibe. Citing influences “comprising iconic bands… from Sense Field, The Appleseed Cast and Sunny Day Real Estate to Hum and The Smashing Pumpkins,” these guys, “have concocted a sound with nods to the past but very much aimed at a contemporary audience.” With “a sonic delicateness,” the group claims to “have expertly combined nuanced, melodic soundscapes with a dynamic, heavy edge; creating an emotive yet forceful sound.” Really, what this band does is bring an eclectic, jazzy approach to their influences from the darker, more experimental world of nineties alt-rock. It can be difficult to see exactly what these guys are trying to accomplish at first, but if you give them a minute you’ll totally get it. The band is going for something grander and more expansive than traditional rock – it’s an approach that needs time to develop over the course of a track. This is a sick tune from a dope band.
