Music From a Birdcage’s ‘Spiral Down’ Is Expansive Lo-Fi Hard Rock

Music From a Birdcage’s ‘Spiral Down’ is sludgy, expansive hard rock with a lo-fi approach. “Music from a Birdcage is the solo project of veteran Bay Area musician Matt Deems,” this artist says, “who has contributed to a number of musical endeavors over the years,” including as “guitarist and songwriter for the respected San Francisco post-rock group Form and Fate.” This track “written and recorded using only an iPad, a $30 iRig interface, and a guitar,” like all of Deems’ work from this project. This is a really well put together track. There’s tons of character in the widely panned, scratchy lead guitar. Behind that, the pocketed-yet-punchy nature of the rhythm section gives the track a solid and the whirring electronic fill out the mix nicely. This is a cool track from a neat artist.
