‘The Right Thing’ by Cannon Eyes is an emotive, well-developed take on pop punk out of Kentucky. These guys describe themselves as, “an indie rock band in Lexington, KY formed by longtime friends Nathan Musick [on guitar and vocals], Jonny Tsang [on bass], Eric Denmark [on drums] and Andrew Denmark [on guitar]. Loud, dark, groovy, singable indie rock made up of four friends with four different tastes in music,” rooted in the mission of making “songs to fall back on when life lets you down, and that let you know you’re not alone,” is how the group sums itself up. This is definitely a pretty strong cut. The composition itself lies pretty squarely within what listeners have come to expect of an emo-inflected pop punk band, but the production on the track and the aesthetic of the various performances is what sets the piece apart. This is a very clean, full recording with bright, airy guitars and a rich, punchy rhythm section. Over that, the vocals are especially well-imbued with emotional grit and the staccato performance from the bass and drums give the piece a real sense of anxiety. This a cool track from a neat band.
