<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8216;Girlfriend&#8217; by Small Words is a clean, crunchy take on a radio-friendly iteration of pop punk. These guys describe themselves as, &#8220;an energetic indie rock band out of Indianapolis, IN.&#8221; This year, the band will release a new record titled <em>Good Day, Bad Me</em>. &#8220;The album explores the struggles of addiction, grief, depression, and accepting one&#8217;s own mortality,&#8221; the band says. &#8220;In these trying times we need to know that it&#8217;s okay to struggle, and no one needs to fight their demons alone.&#8221; It seems like a line can be drawn between this sound and The Starting Line. I would be deeply surprised if these guys didn&#8217;t know about that band. For a pop punk track, this covers a lot of ground. The piece moves effortlessly from glitzy pop choruses to minimalistic acoustic passages. At the end, it takes a very dark turn that serves as a great foil for this otherwise upbeat tune.
