Miscommunication, misinterpretation & misunderstanding, well, we’ve all been there, and Melbourne duo FancyNormal have summed it all up in their latest pop-spritzer bop: FIASCO.
It’s a messy and chaotic ode to miscommunication & trying to understand your significant other. Like being a contestant in a rigged gameshow, where ‘every door you choose you lose’, FancyNormal raises a pinot noir to those who are just tired of guessing what the other is thinking in a relationship that lacks verbalisation.
The duo have had a momentous first year previously releasing their debut EP ‘Starters & Appetizers’ and an engaging remix EP release with Skio Music for their single, Ultra Passion. FIASCO is the cherry on top of what has been an incredible year of releases for Fancy.
Noni fronts FancyNormal as a 5″2′ vocal powerhouse stacked full of Chihuahua attitude. She moved to Australia from Jakarta when she was just 10 years old, unable to speak any English except for the lyrics from Britney Spears’ album “…Baby One More Time”.
Growing up as a teenager in a foreign country, Noni would turn to singing as an emotional release. Building her own vocal booth in the wardrobe covered with yoga mats and pillows, Noni’s vocals are something out of this world that get even more sublime on a live stage.
Jules, originally a classically trained piano player, much to his parents’ disappointment, jumped into a hardcore punk band as soon as he could as a bass player. After studying music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, Jules joined a number of Perth musical acts, most notably alt/indie band Bishi Bashi who supported Evermore.
Learning production for the first time during the lockdown, Jules will have you feeling like you’re strolling on the moon with his warm synths & catchy bass lines.
Noni & Jules decided to make the most of the lockdown by sharing some sparkly positivity through the most romantic musical era ever – the 80s. Together as FancyNormal, Noni & Jules create an ultra-passionate fusion from influences like Ralph, M83 and Carly Rae Jepsen.
Speaking about the single, the band says “it’s not an anti-lovesong per se, but more of a anti-rose-coloured-glasses view of what a real relationship looks like.” Guaranteed dance-a-bility, the track will make you feel heard and maybe even say omfg.
The intro brings us directly into an ehtereal realm. When the soft lead vocals come in for the first verse, it feels like we’re floating through the clouds. The lyrical direction is clever and meaningful, bringing us the catchiness we all crave in music. The chorus hooks us immediately, from the vocal melodies to the earworm of an instrumental. This song is a must-listen through and through!
