Instant Love for This Indie Pop Track: “slipping” by townsend

“slipping” by townsend

Nashville-based artist townsend has released a new track that’s just as much of an impressive introduction to the artist, as much as it is a continuation of his ever-impressive movements across the spaces between pop and indie folk.

Telling a story of the exhausting whiplash of watching time zip past you while busting your ass and trying to make the right decisions, townsend’s “slipping” turns an organic edge of singer-songwriter indie pop into an electrically charged deep cut. His ability to blend genres to place us in his world is as effortless as it is impressive.

A song about trying to keep it all together while you’re exhausted, getting lost in the future, and trying to make sense of what doesn’t exist, townsend’s power hits hard with guitars played like emotional floodgates bursting open for brief moments of perfectly paced chorus hits and gut punches. His voice oscillates between an alluring velveteen touch to heartwrenching jabs over rich rhythm sections of bass and flawlessly blended percussion elements.

The Story Behind “slipping”

“I’ve been a working musician, songwriter, and producer for about the last ten years while also having a day job – needless to say, it can get pretty exhausting trying to balance everything. Life has a way of throwing curveballs when you least expect it, and this song is about just that – working through uncertainty the older I get.” – townsend on “slipping”

Based on the insights made evident in the song, they don’t need to come from townsend directly and literally, as clearly as he can articulate it. Immerse yourself in the pre-chorus, and every lyric that speaks to what “slipping” feels like:

“If I bet the house and I play it down

will it be a safe way out the window

if I pay the price

will I get the life

Do I get to pick which way the wind blows”

But what really hits is the seemingly familiar return to the theme, the severely satisfying line and melody that hits with, “time keeps on slipping [I’m lost in the future]” (If you know, you know. Beautiful use of the reference.)
