Cellmate Electrifies Dance Punk on “1MP0573R!”
If you describe
Cellmate as, in a word, electronic, punk, experimental, industrial, hyperactively energetic, or enthusiastically unpredictable, you’d be right. Words alone don’t capture the kind of animalistic and supercharged punk explosion that Cellmate is setting off in their latest,
“1MP0573R!”You can also call it one of the most original hyped-up gritty sounds you’ve heard in a while. Sonically, “1MP0573R” feels like attaching jumper cables to a high-octane battery and sour candy on one end and your bare skin on the other end, but with a much stronger buzz.
Dance punk at its most exploratory, it almost seems befitting that this track was written and produced in the legendary Woodstock, NY by Cellmate members Maria Alvarez (vocals, guitar) and Steven Markota (bass, programming).
Whoever said punk is dead is probably used to beating a dead horse. And they should look up from the shards of genres shattered by Cellmate. They prove that punk’s evolved, searing as ever, and it’s here to dance in your face on their recent track, “1MP0573R!”

Aptly named, the band laments unrelenting waves of imposter syndrome. In particular, Cellmate writes about a sense of competing against yourself. The track touches on punishing let down of expectations amid a gutting exclamation: “satisfaction of the bleak just disappoints.”
Maria (vocals, guitar) elaborates on her competitive edge, and what she’s in search of:
“How do I explain it’s not a negative?
And yes, I know that it’s all f*cking relative
But still I cannot help, I get competitive
Only with myself, I wanna beat myself!
Perhaps that’s why I tend to do the things I do?
Expectation of a peak just dissipates
And satisfaction of the bleak just disappoints
Because I’m always searching for a… [better way]”
In light of that, you’re left both heavily relating to the lyrics despite a puzzling thought that almost pulls you out of the song: how could a band this good have imposter syndrome? The question doesn’t linger long, not because it answers disappointingly, but because the music makes ignoring the groove impossible. Even in the brief seconds your brain is parsing a message that strikes a deep nerve, the blood-pumping, electronic-infused punk band doesn’t slug you down.
