“Dusty” by Isaac Stalling: A Folk Pop Anthem for Procrastination

Folk pop artist Isaac Stalling has penned a forgiving love letter framed in warm appreciation for the parts of procrastination we can appreciate. From the concept alone, we get a peek at what to expect from a disarming and, frankly, novel thought behind “Dusty.” Isaac Stalling has married the gentle and organic fibers of folk pop to the sweetness of a renewed perspective.

“Dusty” is the second single from Isaac Stalling‘s debut album, Falling in Place, and was co-produced with Sam Skinner (of Pinegrove), highlighting the shared stylistic DNA of their sounds.

A poetic touch of Americana roots, “Dusty” is textured with the soft leather of folk tradition, with brush strokes of an unhurried warmth in his voice. Lyrically, it’s just as laid-back as it is, to Isaac’s own description, slightly chaotic. As the first chorus sets off, we get the bird’s-eye view of the song:

“Who yah ganna take me for

I ain’t a lofty lover, I’m stuck being stubborn

Who yah ganna take me for

I ain’t a saint just a boy with a drawer full of shit to burn”

While influences like Pinegrove, Big Thief, caroline, and even touches of Iron & Wine and John Prine are evident, “Dusty” is one of many Isaac Stalling songs that proves his songs aren’t products; they’re unique and hold their own stories, as a person does. They share their own unique sentiments while holding attention like the gentle hands of a memory. It’s like they brought each instrument up to new surfaces to breathe.

Consequently, what Isaac had to say about the track goes to show that the folk-pop artist plays music from a place of getting together with friends to make something cool, without anything unnecessary in the way of the moment or the honesty. “‘Dusty’ embodies the fun, and slightly chaotic embrace of procrastination. We all do it, and we need an anthem for it!” – Isaac Stalling on his new song, “Dusty”
