The new Houndmouth song hits right away. There’s a grand warmth to the acoustic guitar, sounding as tactile and rich as your favorite cassette playing on well-loved tape machine. Taken from their new album Lordy, “Heavy Eyes” carries a magical feel to it while capturing their tour adventures through Americ; meeting different people, learning their stories, and seeing them year after year, tour after tour. Artists end up forming bonds with these people, and sometimes friendships begin.
Lyrics like “saw Donna at the KOA, still using but she’s A-okay” showcase the addiction crisis in America, but also capture the isolation and grit of living in the middle of nowhere. It’s all right there in the details: “Rest stops and hot dogs, sunsets and OCD.” It’s about driving on tour, traveling across America, loving it and hating it, being thrilled by it but exhausted from it, and living a uniquely complicated American dream.
Then, the track shifts suddenly, there’s this big change in emotion as Houndmouth’s lead singer cries out “I’m burning out, see you later.” The song lifts in energy right as the lyrics his the track. He is desperate, tired, and still driving with “Heavy Eyes.”
What a gift of a song. Lordy, the new Houndmouth album, is out now, and fans need to devour it immediately.
