Take a Trip Through the Simulation with James E. Gray
If you’re in search of a spooky alt rock with a new Britrock flare, you’ve come to the right time and place in this twisted space-time continuum.
James E. Gray is a songwriter, artist, and producer based in Hull / London, England, known for his “spacey vibes” and delightfully eerie aesthetics and themes.
In a style akin to the art rock sides of the likes of Perfume Genius, IDKHOW, and Muse, this kaleidoscopic introspection on the bizarre universe we live in kicks things off with a thesis to repeat and anchor itself throughout the song:
“I’ve seen it all before,
Computeristic laws
A mainframe situation
A simulation”
In a strange, altered reality, the “Simulation” lyric video depicts the Grim Reaper on horseback amid a static pink, acid-washed western backdrop, intercut with captivating visuals of cowboys, skeleton steeds, and extraterrestrials cutting in and out along death’s galloping path.
Easily some of the coolest visuals in a lyric video of the year so far, it does a fantastic job of translating the sonic motions and electricity of “Simulation” into something just as bizarrely and hypnotically, colorfully macabre.
