Chain’s ‘Colder’ is plinky, lo-fi indie-tinged punk rock with an unpretentious, personal tone. Primary songwriter Teal Bluestone “and drummer Alan Bishop met in high school at a laundromat,” the band says. “Teal and guitarist/vocalist Jeremy Murphy met through his work with Portland basement punk outfit Riled. The trio all live together and make the perfect blend of indie rock to complement Teal’s indelible vocals.” Something about these guys screams The Thermals, but it’s more the general idea of combining these two approaches than actual sonic similarity. The band definitely knows how to introduce dissonance and skilled melodic work into the simple structure of these punk rock tunes. Chain really has a unique sound. They’re worth a listen.
