There are few tried and true standby’s in pop music as the testament of longing. The Beatles’ “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drivers License,” and Daft Punk’s “One More Time” each approach this theme with various dynamics but their respective audiences react in favor each time. Here, Charlie Hedges and Eddie Craig bring a bouncing edge to Jack Rose’s testaments in their remix of his smooth work “Rockstar.”

The song begins silently, the swirls that will beckon in the thumping beat moving past like passing cars on a wet street in the dark of night. When the beat inevitably arrives, its complimentary synth lines and house-standby percussive piano lines carry Rose’s vocals into new, if familiar, territory. His words are chopped and sampled to become just as instrumental to the rhythms at play as the aforementioned elements, and remain some of the most dynamic elements of the song. “I’ve been trying to get with you all night” stutters and repeats, taking on new character with each repetition, the autotune blending with the edits to imitate the very energy of one’s own thoughts and words in a club setting- somewhat shaken and bouncing with the energy of the room around them. The “Rockstar” remix has its fun and exits early, at a swift 2:24, but this brevity only works in its favor- it’s one worth coming back to again and again.
