I heard about Crisis Crew this week when my bandmate sent me a live video of them playing “RAT PALACE” by the shed. I was transfixed by the lyrics, admittedly listening more than a few times in a row. Then I saw that they had just released a studio recording of this fantastic song. I rushed to hear that recording immediately and found myself stunned.
Eerie emo guitars with a slight amount of twang provided by hammer-ons, kick off the song. Then a scratchy, raspy voice comes in singing poetic lyrics: “Sirens crawl out of the cabinet, I’m a bleak frame into the fabric…” The voice is genderless, deeply androgynous, and very human. It pulls you by the collar, and as you spiral into the soundwaves coming out of your speaker, you find yourself mesmerized by this unique sound. Now you, too, are a fan of Crisis Crew.
“RAT PALACE” has an incredible amount of emotion packed into the performance, making it remarkable and unignorable.
I had never heard of Crisis Crew until this week, but I’m a fan, and I’m excited to dive into the rest of their catalog and hear what comes next.
