Warm acoustic guitars ring out in a minor key, setting the stage for Hari Vasan’s song “The Experiment.” As the son of immigrants, he sings this heartfelt protest song in defense of migrant rights in the United States while political tensions continue to rise. This is a harsh year, with ICE agents taking over our cities, kidnapping human beings, detaining people for simply existing, and terrorizing our communities. The song comes across as a powerful Americana ballad, rooted in the American folk tradition that has always given protest a voice. One of its most striking moments arrives when Vasan questions whether protest can happen on our knees instead of always standing, and the line lands with quiet, devastating weight. “Can we protest on our knees? Do we always have to stand?” He expresses the fatigue that many of us are feeling as we continue to fight for the rights of those we love. Throughout, the song, Vasan keeps the arrangement tender and unhurried, which lets the urgency of his message cut even deeper.
