Kid Mango’s ‘Threes’ Is Memorable Hip-Hop with a Meaningful Concept

8 9 18 Kid MangoKid Mango’s ‘Threes’ is memorable, intriguing hip-hop with a meaningful concept. The music video, “shot in Bangalore and Lucknow, India,” really helps give the theme some visual credence. The brief explanation that opens the song over some calm clicks and pops, and eventually the beginning of the beat itself, is a great way to get things going. It provides the piece at large with sense of clarity. Kid Mango is really an excellent wordsmith. He’s able to use this horrifying, clearly very formative memory from his childhood to discuss themes ranging from the extremely personal to concepts as macro as post-colonialism in the Indian subcontinent. Under all of that, there’s a jazzy, deeply organic beat that meshes perfectly with the rapper’s flow. There’s something kind of wonky and whimsical about it, but at the same time it feels an important tool for Kid Mango to organize his thought process. This is a truly exceptional track.
