Transphobic Lyrics from Rapper Dax [Content Warning]

We don’t usually write negative reviews, but it is important to call in Dax, a rapper that we have covered on our blog in 2019. We haven’t found any other publications exposing the lyrics in his new song, so we felt compelled to write this post. Unfortunately, Dax submitted a song to our blog called “Rich Men North Of Richmond – Remix” that contains lyrics that are transphobic in nature and promote a false understanding of the trans community. Some of the lyrics in the song are harmful to the trans community, and transgender children, who are at an increased risk for suicide.

So telling these kids they can choose their own gender at ages they can’t even tie their own shoes

No one is telling children that they can choose their own gender. Many transgender children are aware of their gender at an early age, which is completely natural. It’s not something that is forced upon them by adults. They are not taking hormones or getting surgeries at five years old. They are simply just living as their true selves.

The full lyrics of this verse are:

“That’s how they attack us, it starts with the youth

If you lie enough you’ll convince anybody the lie is the truth

So telling these kids they can choose

Their own gender at ages they can’t even tie their own shoes

Drive or drink is crazy

Common sense isn’t common unless it pays me

That’s the thought process daily

Look at the content we’re creating

Lies diluting our brains

I’m done trying to argue allowing these people who think that a vote’s gonna bring about change

How many presidents does it take to have a life worth living, an actual comfortable wage?

No more school shootings, let’s unite these states

It’s a damn shame what the world’s gotten to

For people like me and people like you

Wish I could just wake up and it not be true”

We challenge Dax to look at the content he is creating. These lyrics are directly harmful to the transgender community. Dax, did you know? According to the Trevor Projects 2021 study on LGBTQ Youth, LGBTQ youth are more than 4x as likely to attempt suicide than their peers, 1.8M LGBTQ youth (ages 13-24) seriously consider suicide each year in the U.S. — and at least 1 attempts suicide every 45 secs.

Dax, did you know? The Journal of Adolescent Health, found that transgender & nonbinary youth were up to 2.5x as likely to experience depressive symptoms, seriously consider suicide, & attempt suicide compared to their cisgender LGBQ peers.

I challenge Dax to contact me @RyanCassata on IG, so we can have a peaceful and educational conversation about these lyrics and the harm they do to my community.

Signed,
a trans person
