Hyphen’s ‘Beneath a Smile’ Is Suave British Piano Rap with Lots of Meaning

12 21 18 Hyphen.jpgHyphen’s ‘Beneath a Smile’ is smooth, clean piano-driven rap music out of the United Kingdom. This artist says this “song talks a lot about my experiences of depression, and so the release will be done in collaboration with some mental health organizations.” It feels like this rapper’s unique academic background “in philosophy and economics at University College London,” and his current occupation “in finance in the city of London” bleeds into his music. Everything about this track is extremely smooth. The keys and brass that back up the vocals are technical, sharp and deeply emotive. At the same time, the meaningful lyrics and dynamic, narrative approach are served perfectly by this artist’s punchy, clean approach to rapping. Everything about this track is just right on point.
